THE CARDIGAN, A PIECE WITH A TIMELESS DANDY CHIC SPIRIT
A cardigan is a knitted garment that can be fastened at the front with buttons or a zip. Unlike a jumper, which has to be pulled over the head, it can be worn layered over another piece. There are two schools of thought when it comes to this garment: those who prefer coarse knits and those who prefer fine knits.
The noble history of the cardigan: from the clothing of fishermen to that of counts
It is thought to have originated in the 19th century. It was popularised by the Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, who came all the way from Wales. Today, this British aristocrat is recognised as much for his military exploits as for his extravagance. Feeling cramped in his pullover, he simply slit it open with his sword. Around the second half of the 19th century, his invention was fitted with buttons and marketed.
However, it is thought that the heritage of this garment goes back much further. According to historians, French and British fishermen were already wearing woollen jackets open at the front in the 17th century.
In the 1920s, the iconic Coco Chanel associated it with tailoring. Later, the designer Agnès b made it her signature piece.
It's a classic piece, but it's also very fashionable.
Cardigans have become increasingly popular in recent years, with both men and women models wearing them at the most prestigious fashion shows. Although cardigans date back to the 19th century, they are still a staple in every wardrobe, regardless of age or gender. The piece is so popular that popular culture has seized on it as the benchmark for knitwear. Taylor Swift even named one of her songs Cardigan, bearing witness to the influence of this fashion item on culture.
